Outdoor provision and physical play

Outdoor provision and physical play

The Nursery has large, bright & spacious play rooms and a large sports hall where the children can practise their physical skills whatever the weather. The sports hall is equipped with trikes, balls, parachutes, soft play and much more. Our daily planning will include focused activities which allow children to practise skills appropriate to their age and stage of development.

For example, babies and toddlers will have opportunities to develop their gross motor skills and increase in confidence using tunnels, dens and boxes. They will acquire independence with a range of appropriate resources and enjoy kicking, throwing and catching balls. Older children will have daily opportunities to walk, run, jump, climb, spin and roll. They will use trikes and push along vehicles both indoors and outdoors.

Our outdoor learning will be from daily planned trips within the local area, so unlike other settings, the outdoor play provision constantly changes and evolves in line with the children’s interest and needs. We tailor our activities and learning experiences to ensure we are meeting the desired outcomes for our children, often working around a theme or book. For example when we are looking at the book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ we use the outdoors as inspiration and set off to find long wavy grass, thick oozy mud and a narrow gloomy cave, we hope we don't find a snow storm or a bear though!

Places of interest on our adventures:

  • Horsforth Hall park

  • Drury fields

  • Hunger hills woods & surrounding fields

  • Horsforth Library

  • Horsforth Children's Centre

  • Local shops

These trips will include planned and unplanned outdoor opportunities for the children to develop all 7 areas of learning.
